Hi there! Since my last update about my travels as a remote intern, I traveled to southern Chile where I worked in an off-grid hostel in the Andes. Desplácese hacia abajo para leer esta entrada en español. This lovely hostel was located in an isolated mountain community surrounded by volcanoes and waterfalls at the top of the Patagonia region. Due to this remote location, I took this time to recharge and disconnect from technology.
My hosts were a wonderful family who had decided to escape the big city of Santiago and build a hostel completely off the grid. This cozy building has several large solar panels that provide electricity for lighting from nightfall until midnight. After that, the power is shut off to save energy and there is only the woodstove and the stars to provide light. I worked several hours a day in exchange for room and board, by cleaning or repairing the gravel driveway.
Guests come from all over the country to recharge in this secluded place, and I could see why. Without the option to escape into the internet, I found myself really able to enjoy nature and take time to think and read. As much as I appreciate technology, I realized how much its presence can generate unnoticed stress and anxiety. I think the internet has done amazing things for humanity, but I do believe we need to make sure that it doesn’t consume our lives. GatherBoard is a great example of this balance: through the convenience of an online calendar, it is easier to find meaningful events to attend in person. As I look ahead to the rest of the summer and into a career in computer science, I want to make sure that I continue to balance my time on and off the internet.
Though I enjoyed my time unplugged, I am refreshed and ready to get back to work! I’ll be working on the GatherBoard website and updating help sections for license holders. I’m also moving on to California, so stay tuned for more updates!

¡Hola! Desde mi última actualización sobre mis viajes como una pasante remota, viajé al sur de Chile donde trabajé en un hostel fuera de la red en los Andes. Este hostel bonito se encuentra en una comunidad aislada de montañas, rodeada de volcanes y cascadas al comienzo de la Patagonia. Debido a esta ubicación remota, me tomé este tiempo para recargar y desconectar de la tecnología.
Mis anfitriones eran una familia maravillosa que había decidido escapar de la gran ciudad de Santiago y construir un hostel completamente fuera de la red eléctrica. Este edificio acogedor tiene varios paneles solares que proporcionan electricidad para la iluminación desde el anochecer hasta la medianoche. Después de eso, la electricidad se apaga para ahorrar energía y sólo hay la estufa de leña y las estrellas para proporcionar luz. Trabajé varias horas al día a cambio de alojamiento y comida, por limpieza o reparación de la calzada de grava. Los huéspedes vienen de todo el país para recargar en este lugar aislado, y pude ver el porqué. Sin la opción de escapar en el internet, me encontré realmente la capaz de disfrutar de la naturaleza y tomar tiempo para pensar y leer. Por mucho que aprecie la tecnología, me di cuenta de lo mucho que su presencia puede generar estrés y ansiedad desapercibidos. Creo que el internet ha hecho cosas increíbles para la humanidad, pero creo que tenemos que asegurarnos de que no consuma nuestras vidas. GatherBoard es un gran ejemplo de este equilibrio: a través de la comodidad de un calendario en línea, es más fácil encontrar eventos significativos para asistir en persona. Mientras miro hacia el resto del verano y en una carrera en la informática, quiero asegurarme de que sigo equilibrando mi tiempo dentro y fuera del internet.
