Hi! This is Betta the intern, and I am back to share another update about my travels. Desplácese hacia abajo para leer esta entrada en español. I have spent the last month at a Tibetan Buddhist center in the woods of Northern California, through the work-exchange program WorkAway. It has been an incredible and enriching experience to learn more about Buddhism and Tibetan culture, and to explore beautiful redwood forests. In between working in the kitchen and helping to put on events, I have been working hard on GatherBoard projects.
This center was originally built as a Californian prison camp, where crew members worked to maintain roads in the rural forestland outside of Santa Rosa. A decade ago, it was sold to a Tibetan lama, who has transformed it into a beautiful retreat center. The center rents out dorm space to a variety of organizations, including a youth meditation camp and a group for deaf quilters. Visitors can wander through gorgeous gardens and redwoods draped with prayer flags, and enjoy delicious vegetarian food (which I got to help make). I was also invited to participate in a Buddhist retreat, with lectures and meditation from dawn until dusk for two weeks! I was worried I wouldn’t be able to spend so much time in silence, but I came to develop a deep appreciation for these Buddhist teachings, as well as Tibetan art, music and dance. You never know what you are capable of until you try!
Despite the emphasis of this center on engaging with nature and the mind instead of technology, its activities wouldn’t be possible without the internet. It would be impossible to find without an online presence, so the center’s website has been crucial in ensuring that people are able to benefit from this unique and special place. I feel very lucky that the internet has allowed us to discover these amazing opportunities wherever they may be. This is exactly what platforms like GatherBoard aim to do: to provide communities with exceptional events like these, where you can have an international experience without leaving the country!
For my internship work with GatherBoard, I have renovated the help center with Zendesk. ¡Hola! Esta es Betta la pasante, y estoy de vuelta para compartir otra actualización sobre mis viajes. He pasado el último mes en un centro budista tibetano en los bosques del norte de California, a través del programa de WorkAway. Ha sido una experiencia increíble y enriquecedora aprender más sobre el budismo y la cultura tibetana, y explorar hermosos bosques de secuoyas. Entre trabajar en la cocina y ayudar con eventos, he estado trabajando duro en proyectos de GatherBoard.
Este centro fue construido originalmente como un campo de prisioneros de California, donde los miembros de la tripulación trabajaron para mantener las carreteras en la tierra boscosa rural fuera de Santa Rosa. Hace una década, fue vendido a un lama tibetano, que lo ha transformado en un hermoso centro de retiro. El centro alquila espacio dormitorio a una variedad de organizaciones, incluyendo un campamento de mediación juvenil y un grupo para colcheros sordos. Los visitantes pueden pasear por bellos jardines y secuoyas cubiertas con banderas de oración, y disfrutar de deliciosa comida vegetariana (que ayudé a hacer). ¡También fui invitada a participar en un retiro budista, con conferencias y meditación desde el amanecer hasta el anochecer durante dos semanas! Me preocupaba que no sería capaz de pasar tanto tiempo en silencio, pero he desarrollado un profundo aprecio por estas enseñanzas budistas, así como por el arte, la música y la danza tibetanas. ¡Nunca sabe de lo que es capaz hasta que lo intenta!
A pesar del énfasis de este centro en involucrarse con la naturaleza y la mente en lugar de la tecnología, sus actividades no serían posibles sin el internet. Sería imposible encontrar sin presencia en línea, por lo que la página web del centro ha sido crucial para garantizar que las personas puedan beneficiarse de este lugar único y especial. Me siento muy afortunada de que el internet nos ha permitido descubrir estas increíbles oportunidades dondequiera que estén.
